Are you excited!?
**drumroll**
As, the title states, this is supposed to be a clash between the let’s just be a little extra- the angelic and demonic sides of the tech industry.
Isn’t it interesting? Considering the fact, that all of us have this mischievous side that owns a QUITE a taste in debates huh?
So, the title says, “Glamorization”. To set a basis for the debate we’re going to start slow. The meaning of glamourization is “beautification” or “to enhance in beauty”. We’re talking about the glamourization of the biggest and most advanced industry of this time. The literal “Oxygen” for all other industries in this century, and most importantly the “bread and butter” for as an estimate says- approximately 62 million of the 7.9 billion population of the world, which is 0.78% of the entire population of the world as of today. And yes, as it seems this figure ACTUALLY IS Mundial.
Now that’s just the employment figure. Imagine the percentage of people having exposure to tech in their daily lives.
The figure that’s supposed to come to our minds right now is what? Everyone?!
Of course! Why wouldn’t it?
63% of the world’s population, as stated by an article, has access to technology. 90% of the more developed population has access to technology. So almost a third of the world’s population has access to technology.
This, glitz and glamour of the tech industry seems pretty bright right?!
These are just some of the facts on how deeply the IT industry and its products are rooted in today’s world.
Now let’s shed some of that glamourous light on the good and bad effects of the tech industry on a global scale.
Digitization of money dealings:
Business is one of the giant platforms that the tech industry has effects upon. The first thing that comes up is digitization. Most of today’s business has been digitized, with companies accumulating data from customers in bulk, where data science and analysis step in. Technological advancement has helped us design databases that help store, organize and access data on a large scale. Coming back to digitization, most of them have their own websites and are shifting to application-based dealing which is obviously very convenient as it removes the factor of physical data storage and placing orders, etc.
Could we have imagined that we’d be bringing to the table through cryptocurrency? Cash is pretty cutting edge though. Instead of waiting in a line in the bank to pay a bill, or sending the cheque through the mail, you can just hop online on a website and instantly pay bills, send money to another city or a country, even invest and buy things and have them delivered over.
Economical Facilitation:
It is absolutely no doubt that technology has made things cheaper. The 2GB hard disk that cost a fortune ten years ago, compared to that a 1TB disk costs a few thousand rupees today. The keypad phone that was supposedly expensive, is now the cheapest and almost “extinct” piece of tech in the market. With each lapse of advancement, the technological support in every field is becoming more and more common and cheap and the next version is even more sophisticated and a dial-up on the price tag.
A Basis for all other industrial sectors:
The tech industry influences every industrial sector at a grassroots level. As discussed above with business we have virtual money, then there’s the education sector, with online learning platforms that provide diplomas and degrees. We have the health care sector with AI-based applications being designed to replicate the diagnosis procedure through blood sample imaging and symptoms. The GPS and virtual mapping with the feature of estimating the time of the journey and directions, AIs like Google Assistant, Siri, and Cortana which a voice-activated and study the habitual activities of the user. Online grocery applications, food delivery services, and so many more practical functionalities of the tech industry.
Technology is a source of innovation:
With the advancements in technology, an amazing fact is that it’s a cycle that’s making us more innovative. As scientists study and design new application concepts to ease the human experience, it also serves as a basis for the next generations to improve and design new pieces of technology. And that implies innovation in every single field discussed above. From farming to computer analysis of data for treating cancer, every day new ideas grow and flourish.
Lack of motivation:
These technological advancements have benefited humanity in every manner known to us. Yet with each increase in ease and facilitation, it keeps making us lazy by the day. Lack of motivation to physically do anything and being constantly immersed in devices and gadgets have had a negative effect on us as individuals and as a part of a community.
Communication, improved or deprived:
We all know that communication has greatly improved due to advancements in tech, which include face time, voice calling, texting, social media, etc. It has deliberately made the entire world fit onto a single screen. But the human experience is something that it has overcome. The physical experience, talking, eye contact, and touch, things meant to be irreplaceable, are being replaced and it has taken a toll on us on an individual level. Mental illnesses are one of the major side effects of this techy lifestyle. The influence that social media has on our minds and habits is also drastic.
Cybercrimes:
With user facilitation, technological advancement has demonstrated a marked increase in cybercrimes like cyberbullying, lack of data security and copyrighting, blackmailing, and hacking has grown to a noticeable level. Data integrity isn’t always safe. New generations have access to unsuitable data and information. All of these factors collectively build up to a noticeable evil side of technology.
Putting all of this in one frame; yes, the tech industry has grown far deeper than we ever would have imagined, and it has spread on a nano-level among the population rooting within the most basic business ideals, the entertainment industry, mechanical industry, the medicine, and health care sector, and all the different necessary industries throughout the world. It has latched onto our lifestyle; from groceries to relationships to family life to our meetings and gatherings and even to our smallest individualistic habits.
But does it necessarily have to be good or bad? Real or fake? As stated above, angelic or demonic?
It all depends on perceptive opinions but, no. It does not have to be on one extreme polarity. And ultimately it depends on us, as individuals and as a part of our own society and the human community to make the most out of tech but to balance it. With our lifestyle and mostly with what seems more human. Yes, we’re going to be alive for who knows how long, and generations are going to come and life will ultimately go on. But that does not mean that we stop here, that we rip out these techy roots and go back to the stone age. It’s not even possible, no. But realizing that with every lapse of advancement and progress comes a greater need to balance it with the core principles of the human existence, which implies the progression of ethics, knowledge, and information, of course, improvement in lifestyle and business, providing better facilities and ease to the next generation.
Advancing technologically is literally COOL but let’s not lose the very quality of our being with it. Let’s balance the knowledge, ethics, morality, and the most basic essence of our existence, being humans.
Because none of us wants the robots to take over the world, do we?
